Hungary is purchasing two million doses of Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine, sufficient to inoculate one million people, Péter Szijjártó has announced.

The foreign minister said the vaccine will be delivered in three stages, with Hungary receiving doses for 300,000 people in the first month, 500,000 in the second month and 200,000 in the third. After talks with Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Moscow, Szijjártó called the agreement a great achievement “in a situation where vaccine shipments to Hungary are slow and the epidemic is claiming 100-150 lives a day…” Lavrov said cooperation in the fight against the epidemic represented a new area of bilateral ties. He added that Sputnik V had proven effective in Hungary and the Hungarian experts had approved its use accordingly. Meanwhile, the prime minister announced that the government has ordered the construction of a vaccine plant capable of producing a range of vaccines. The plant is to be built in Debrecen, in eastern Hungary. The country needs as much vaccine as possible since lives depend on it and “every life counts”, Viktor Orbán told public radio, adding that restrictions could not be lifted until mass vaccinations have taken place.
